London gardens trends for summer 2021

We don’t need to repeat the importance of gardens and balconies in London, with any kind of outdoor oasis remaining the top of many home moving wish lists - especially as there is still a degree of uncertainty around overseas travel.
Whether you want to make your outside space a key point of attraction before selling or renting out a property you own – or if you have just moved into a new home - getting ready to enjoy the great outdoors the moment the sun shines should be high on your priority list.
More than any other year, there are some great garden trends to help you make the most of your outdoor space – many of which are portable enough to be moved with you to your next home. Here are Behr & Butchoff’s top seven summer garden additions:-
-
Pizza ovens: if you like your Italian classic fresh out of a wood-fired oven rather than off the back of a moped, a home pizza oven is a must. Brands such as Ooni come in table top formats that cook dough and toppings in a matter of minutes – ideal for quick mid-week suppers or garden gatherings.
-
Outdoor kitchens: if you’re really serious about al fresco cooking, you might want to explore the trend for outdoor kitchens, where facilities can include a permanent sink with running water, worktops and cupboards. Bespoke options can include built-in barbecues, grills and log stores but look out for smaller options on wheels too.
-
Fire pits: lighting up a fire as the sun goes down is a great way to extend time spent outside. Fire pits also provide a real focal point, harking back to camping holidays but with a more chic spin. Opt for a traditional bowl-shape pit that can double as a barbeque if you add a grill.
-
Posh paddling pools: if they’re stocked by both The Conran Shop and Selfridges, you know that paddling pools have had an upgrade. As well as providing hours of water fun for small people, a pop-up pool provides a place for weary adults to dunk their feet. Look out for the Mylle and Liewood brands for less garish choices.
-
Festival-style lighting: nothing lends a more welcoming atmosphere than outdoor lighting. Solar, battery-operated and USB rechargeable bulbs have become more sophisticated, allowing you to adorn trees and terraces with festoon strings, twinkling fairy lights and lanterns. Or bring the inside out with solar powered floor and table lamps – try Lighting Direct for options.
-
Cinema rooms: watching a film under the stars is a hot 2021 summer trend, with sales of projectors and screens suitable for outdoor viewing soaring. Dress the area with outdoor sofas, weatherproof bean bags, floor cushions and throws, and you’ll never buy a cinema ticket again.
-
Canopy cover: the great British summertime is not always reliable but wet conditions – or unbearable direct sunlight – can be overcome with a canopy. You can add all-year, all-weather appeal and versatility to an outside space with an awning, sail canopy, gazebo or covered pergola.
